DTLA: The Pie Hole
After dinner one evening, my friend was craving sweets. I generally don’t eat dessert so it took me a moment to remember there was a nearby pie shop that had been recommended to me. We headed over to The Pie Hole. It’s across the street from the still very popular Wurstkuche in the arts district of Downtown Los Angeles, just east of Little Tokyo.
I liked the clean brightly lit room. It reminded me of some shops in San Francisco.
My friend decided on the maple custard which she loved with a side of the house whipped cream. I had a tiny bite as it was a pretty small piece. I liked its subtle maple flavor. And I guess my friend loved it because she demolished it in about 5 minutes.
She also got the horchata latte (not shown) while I had the chai latte. Mine was a bit too sweet for me, tasting mostly of honey. I might try a regular chai next time but the salted caramel latte also sounded pretty damn good.
My favorite chocolate crostata is from Sotto in West LA. I was going to go for the Earl Grey pie but decided to try the crostata. It’s not quite the same as the crust was definitely more pie-like, which was rich and buttery. That I liked. I liked Sotto’s more but The Pie Hole’s wasn’t bad.
I’ll have to come back for that Earl Grey pie.
