May Minty Crawl: Banh Mi, Baby
Back in January of ’09, I tackled some banh mi shops along Valley in the San Gabriel Valley. My ultimate favorite that day was Saigon’s Sandwich & Bakery though my group generally liked Banh Mi My Tho. I think it’s interesting how there’s been a big interest in Vietnamese food in the last couple of years or so beginning with several trucks and a plethora of new shops springing up.
Instead of heading back to the SGV and way south to Westminster, I’m going to check out the banh mi shops in Chinatown.
Starting with Jonathan Gold’s favorite:
11 a.m. – Buu Dien
642 N Broadway, Los Angeles, CA 90012 – (213) 617-8355
11:30 a.m. – Lien Hoa Deli & Seafood
721 N Broadway, Los Angeles, CA 90012 – (213) 625-5001
12Noon -L.A. Sandwiches
736 N Broadway #106, Los Angeles, Ca 90012- (213) 617-1563
12: 30 p.m. – Nam Thai Vietnamese Catering
truck is found on the corner of Alpine & Spring (211 Alpine St., Los Angeles, CA 90012)
1 p.m. – The Spice Table
114 S. Central St., Los Angeles, CA 90012 – 213-620-1840
Our last stop will be the Spice Table in Little Tokyo so we can end with a celebratory beverage or two. Check out my lunch review here.
A few notes-
For the most part, the banh mi sandwiches should run a couple of bucks. Really, $2. We will be sharing and since most of these places are sandwich shacks, we will not be lingering. All times are approximate. You’re welcome to join the crawl at any point. I will be updating locations as we go that day but possibly, we will be busy stuffing our faces so get my contact information before the crawl. Please RSVP here via Facebook.
Ahhh.. I’d love to come to this but not sure if I’ll be able to b/c it’s right before my GRE. Lacey was just asking me last night about when your next crawl was.
