Plan Your Summer Staycation: July Events in LA
Now that it’s officially summer, I have been itching to get away. I’ll be in San Francisco next month for a bit but until then, let’s find some things to do around town.
July 9, 16, 23 – ColLAboration Beer Garden Pop-ups
Get your craft beer on.
July 13 – Thrillist Bols Genever DTLA Punch Crawl
6 bars. 5 hours. $25 bucks. Read about my crawl with Bols Genever last Fall here.
July 14 – Bastille Day at The Cliff
Celebrate in grand fashion at the Cliff with a 3-course $45 Bastille Day menu which includes a choice of French onion soup, escargot, boeuf bourguignon, braised rabbit in mustard sauce, profiteroles or tarte tatin. The meal comes with a glass of wine. Also, there’ll be photo opportunities in the bar (hey, stick your head in a guillotine, why won’t you?) and complimentary cake and rose wine. Reservations recommended and costumes encouraged.
Cliffs Edge – 323-666-6116
July 16 – 17 Carmaggedon! Avoid the 405 freeway between the 10 and 101 freeways.
Restaurants around town are running specials. My picks are 20% off dinner Friday through Sunday at Drago Santa Monica, Drago Centro’s “4 fo’ 5” gelato sampler (4 gelati for $5) and Yujean Kang’s is doing their $20 Sunday Sino Special the entire weekend including Friday and Saturday (perhaps check out LA Street Food Fest at the Rose Bowl for one of the earlier sessions and head over to Old Town for supper). The Sino Supper is a $20 family-style dinner meant to be shared by two people.
Free admission. Includes demos, workshops, music and contests. Food priced $5 or less. Beer and wine gardens. A marketplace featuring local products will be available as well. I’m interested in the Future of Food Writing panel moderated by OC Weekly’s Gustavo Arrelano with LA Times’ Russ Parsons, LA Weekly’s Squid Ink’s Amy Scattergood and Deep End Dining’s Eddie Lin on Saturday at 4 p.m. A cookbook swap is planned all day Sunday near the Backyard Farm Animals. Check out the website for all the details.
Saturday, July 16 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Sunday, July 17 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
$39 3-Course Prix Fixe dinner at Cafe Pinot
Chef Kevin Meehan’s farmers’ market driven 3-course meal at Cafe Pinot in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles weeknights Monday through Friday.
$85 for two- includes a cheese and charcuterie plate, a taste of 5 small plates and two desserts with coffee or tea to be served before or after the concert. Take the water taxi from Vu to the Burton Chase Park to enjoy a concert on Thursday and Saturday nights (until August 27).
