Pasadena: Spam Fried Rice Bigger Than Your Head at Guppy House
Guppy House is a local chain of modern Asian tea houses. Guppy House opened a location in Old Town Pasadena recently joining the ranks of other Asian foodie favorites like Little Sheep Hot Pot and Poke Salad Bar. Guppy House is probably best known for its Asian tea drinks, with or without boba (tapioca balls) but this location also has beer and cocktails at an attached side bar. We decided to try it when we realized many places had already closed for the night. Any night getting a bowl of noodles, dumplings, squid balls and spam fried rice is just fine with me.
I’m always down for a bowl of beef noodle soup. This bowl could’ve been a bit spicier but nothing a douse of hot sauce couldn’t fix. I did appreciate the large amount of spinach as there isn’t a single vegetable dish on the menu.
Squid balls are similar to fish or shrimp balls. They’re ground up squid and had an admirable bouncy mouth feel. Guppy House deep fried these to perfection. You hardly needed the sauce as they were oh very moist. Now go back and read that without a dirty mind. Okay, fine, read bouncy mouth feel and moist however you like.
I somehow expected the named super spicy and sour dumplings to actually be spicy but it probably was for the best they weren’t. Also, the corn hater in the group appreciated the side of corn wasn’t in the sauce with the noodles. Once everything was combined to our liking, I found this dish to be very addicting.
We were feeling a bit peckish when we ordered all the carbs. But it was still a surprise to find the fried rice was like Chinese banquet style– enough to feed a table of 10. I probably had a bowl as did the other two and we packed up more than half to go.
I’m interested in trying the other noodle dishes on other late nights in Pasadena.(626) 792-688
