Waterloo & City or My Love Letter to JGold

Now you might wonder why the hell have I decorated a photo of Jonathan Gold like a love-struck teenager. Well, because I think it’s funny. I don’t usually do things unless it’s funny or fun.  I jokingly took this admittedly bad cell phone pic and posted it on Twitter. I even tagged him. Next thing I know, he’s looking at the photo on his phone and peering about Waterloo & City, the restaurant. I was signing the check but I knew he knew it was me.

My friend later joked on twitter we “papped” him which led to a disgruntled fan lecturing us we should have left him alone so he could do his job. Er, other than this photo, we most certainly did not bother him. I didn’t even say hi. And perhaps I should have. After all, he’s mentioned me before.

The Basil Dazzle

Many people have asked me why “Minty.” Well, I like mint. I also like basil. Find me a drink with basil and I’ll drink it. This cocktail normally comes with gin but I requested it with vodka.

The Commoner- Chicken Liver & Foie Gras Mousse

Since there was only two of us, we ordered the Commoner which included one cured meat and a terrine or pate of our choice. I went for it- liver and more liver. I later noticed that the huge board they gave JGold probably was the Supreme Being** platter because it looked bigger than the Prince or King portion.

lobster ravioli

My friend had the lobster ravioli. It’s nice Waterloo has half portions and full portions available. Considering I never think enough raviolis are served, I probably wouldn’t get the half portion myself.

Braised Pork Shank

I was feeling particularly meaty that night and went for the braised pork shank with mirabelle plums. These plums were really sour to the point of almost being bitter. The massive portion would probably be great for two more meals. I had leftovers for days.

We hopped over to Alibi Room in lieu dessert afterward. I quite enjoyed my Stars and Stripes cocktail. It featured rum, Benedictine, grenadine and passionfruit and lime juices. A friend enjoyed their gigantico glass of white sangria.

** I made up Supreme Being size. I doubt they have such a thing for commoners– just Jonathan Gold who very likely is a foodie’s Supreme Being.
