Westwood: Skylight Gardens
Skylight Gardens in Westwood opened a few months ago in February. I checked it out recently before checking out the new Made in LA exhibit at the Hammer Museum.
I started out with the Skylight Negroni. I breathed a sign of relief to find the cocktail properly stirred. It tasted just like a like a regular Negroni so I’m not sure what makes it their eponymous Negroni. I would recommend they just use orange peels instead of a orange slice as it made it look too much like a “martini.”
My dining companion ordered the risotto with filet mignon while I was torn between ordering pasta or an entree. She liked her risotto well enough and the steak was very tender.
I ended up getting the seafood pasta, the tagliolini neri which came with clams, squid, rock shrimp and mussels. The nicely garlic-y sauce tasted fresh though I felt the shellfish was cooked just a tiny bit longer than necessary. My friend called the squid chewy. It wasn’t that bad but I do like squiggly bits a bit more squiggly. I loved the roasted cherry tomatoes in the dish.
Overall it was a good experience and our server was very friendly. I wouldn’t mind coming back for happy hour which runs Monday through Saturdays from 4 to 7 PM. The liquid options are standard margaritas, Cosmos, martinis and such but very affordable with prices ranging from $4 to $5. There’s also a steak sandwich I want to try during lunch.
I could be convinced to try the pizza as well but with 800 Degrees next door, that may have to wait.
