DTLA: Paul Shoemaker’s Juicy Lucy is Now Open

Growing up in Los Angeles means I have a lot of memories associated with certain places. I would go to the little shopping mall with my parents at what is now known as FIGat7th. And then when I started working in Downtown L.A., I would visit the food court in search of a quick bite. My favorite was the Sam Kabob shop. I still miss that place.

Now, with the new Target anchoring FIGat7th, all new eateries occupy the newly named Taste food court. I was invited to check out Juicy Lucy, Paul Shoemaker’s burger spot. Chef Shoemaker has worked at many fine restaurants including Water Grill, The French Laundry, Providence, Bastide and his own spot in Malibu, Savory.

With over 300 RSVPs to the party, the community is clearing showing their burger love.

We were invited to try the agua frescas and sample the Sriracha cheese fries while waiting for burgers (sliders for the party). I opted to go a bit healthier and get the plain sea salt fries. They reminded me of In N Out fries but thicker. This means they tasted like real potatoes.

Juicy Lucy is adorned with buzz words like “farmed in California,” “free range, “Niman Ranch” and more. The first bite I took was the turkey burger with avocado and whole grain mustard. As I was eating the juicy thing, an older man came up to me and demanded if I was going to finish it.

Wow, these burgers are magical and everyone wants a taste!

Sadly, I didn’t get to try the actual Juicy Lucy which is a burger with cheese INSIDE the patty. I’ll have to go back as Taste and all its promising new lunch options aren’t too far from me.

I did however try the kimchi slider which I hope will make it occasionally on the menu as a Chef Burger which is the daily market inspired burger.

Juicy Lucy also serves shakes. I tried the salted caramel which was quite nice. They are in the process of securing a beer and wine license so look for daytime imbibing soon. For now they’re planning to open until 5PM but perhaps in the future they’ll be able to accommodate the local residents and other after-5 folks, they’ll open later.
