DTLA: Birdsong’s Veggietaria Now Open
I’m always looking for a new lunch spot in DTLA and recently checked out the newly opened Birdsong’s Veggietaria. I’m not a vegetarian or vegan but I like eating veg sometimes. The brightly painted storefront offers quite the extensive menu and even has homemade kale chips (I enjoyed these!).
I got the two “meat” combo with the veggie teriyaki “chicken” and veggie “spare ribs.” The flavors were great and you got a lot of food. I would probably get only one “meat” next time and two sides. Sides include mac and cheese, beans, collard greens, quinoa, sauteed veggies and more.
I was fascinated by my friend’s plate. She got the two sides combo with one “meat.” And she opted for the “drumsticks.” This is soy meat wrapped around sticks creating the drumsticks.
The counter woman said the fake meats are made of soy and other good stuff. We joked magic. They also have fresh juices and were offering shakes and fresh fruit salad that day.
The only thing I found a bit disconcerting was the TV was playing a non-stop loop of why it’s so great to be veg. The dark vibe of the video didn’t match the cheerfulness of the cafe. I would find a different video. The message could be the same but maybe delivered someone more engaging.
