Pasadena: Chirashi & Bento at Osawa
Osawa Japanese Restaurant in Old Town Pasadena has been serving excellent fare for years. Known for shabu shabu, it’s also a great place to stop for a casual meal izakaya style. But if you have a hard time deciding which small plates to get, I recommend getting the chirashi bowl or bento “box.” They also have a full service sushi counter.
Being the type of person who likes to try lots of different things, getting the bento was the way to go for me. Not only did I get a few slices of sashimi but I also got a tasty bit of steak, cooked salmon, spicy salmon roll, pickles, rice, soup and my favorite, seafood chawanmushi. The steamed egg custard had bits of seafood which made it more luxurious than the standard chawanmushi.
My friend ordered the chirashi bowl. I did look on with envy over how much fish she got including a scoop of spicy tuna but I was satisfied with my bento. I also had ordered the mizuna salad to share which comes with tiny fried fish (look out vegetarians!).
Next time I’m indulging in the sushi bar and going omakase style.
