DTLA: Lunch at Fritzi Dog at Vibiana
Fritzi Dog is open for lunch Monday through Fridays in the courtyard of the Vibiana in Downtown Los Angeles. There’s also another location at the Original Farmers Market. Chef Neal Fraser’s hot dog stand features all sorts of dogs including snappy, beef and pork, all beef, chicken, duck and the vegetarian option, carrot. There were so many options for toppings that I decided to just get one of their specialty dogs with onions and mustard. I also got a lemonade. You can get a free order of tots or fries if you buy a dog and a drink. I went with chili cheese tots which I was delighted by some fries thrown in as well. Chili cheese fries AND tots, my mind was blown.
The Pittsburgh dog may seem simple at first but it was nicely balanced. Next time I might dare to get the duck with relish and onions or maybe an all-beef dog with everything spicy thrown at it like the woman who ordered after me. The combinations seemed endless.
I managed to eat all the tots but left a “few” fries behind. This is a meal best shared with friends (or coworkers!).
Since I hate carrots, I’ll have to leave the vegetarian option alone. But someone tell me how it is. I’m curious about the whole carrot working as a hot dog.
I really liked sitting in the courtyard with views of City Hall. It’s around the corner from Redbird which is also open for lunch but I might save that as a dinner option– that is until I run out of different hot dog combinations to try.
