SGV: KBBQ at Honey Pig

Honey Pig has opened a new location in Monterey Park. It’s an all-you-can-eat Korean barbecue place in what is rapidly becoming a foodie-centric shopping plaza. There’s dim sum/ Chinese food, ramen, hot pot and now very good grill-your-own action.

The spacious restaurant has modern decor and really good ventilation. That’s important when you’re grilling meat at the tables.

At Honey Pig, there’s a self-serve bar loaded with all sorts of banchan (appetizers) and some cooked food. Also load up on radish wraps here to go with your meats.

I didn’t try any of the cooked dishes but my brother says the beef curry were good. I spied some kimbap (rice sushi) that I might have to try next time. And grab fruit for dessert.

I’m pretty much banchan greedy and had to try all the pickled things. My favorites were the mushrooms and greens. The cucumber spears turned out to be pretty spicy while the cucumber rounds weren’t. I also had a good time putting together epic bites piling on kimchi, bean sprouts or bits of seaweed on top of grilled meat and radish wraps.

There are two pricing levels. We chose the Set A which comes with everything except three choices. Set B gets you everything plus beef short ribs, steak and special jowl meat.

Since there were plenty of choices with Set A, we decided to get half orders of quite a few starting with cha dol (brisket). We also got beef tongue, beef rib finger, bulgogi, thin sliced pork belly, black pork belly (the stuff that looks like thick slabs of bacon!), and tiger shrimp. I’m going to have to go back to try more of the marinated meats including the marinated short ribs and marinated black pork belly. I also would love to try the marinated squid.

Daring folks might want to try the veal intestines (labeled as gut on the menu). Or chicken lovers can get the boneless thigh meat, marinated or spicy.

For those in the SGV who don’t want to drive out to Koreatown, this is a nice option for KBBQ.
