West Hollywood: I Tried 9 of the Hundred+ New Drinks at The Abbey

Strawberry Daiquiri

Strawberry Daiquiri

What if I told you I tried 9 new drinks at The Abbey? But it seems like a small number when you realize The Abbey has a brand new menu and features 100+ new drinks crafted by consultant and former Abbey bartender Armando Conway. It’s a menu broken down into several categories including the fun LGB-Tiki section. I was invited to check it out and boy, did I have a good time runing through the menu.

The popular gay friendly hangout says they buy more Absolut, Bacardi and Patron than anyone else so it seems like why bother changing up a good thing? Well, it turns out, tastes do change and the Abbey decided to dip a toe into the craft cocktail waters. There are still flavored spirits but now the drinks are better because they’re using fresh juices. And they have always used fresh garnishes. Don’t fret, you can still get the number one selling Wild Berry Martini but it’s going to be better than ever before.

The best garnished drink (outside of the Spanish-style gin and tonics) must be the Strawberry Daiquiri with the little plastic monkey.

crab cakes

Did you know the Abbey has food? Of course you did! But did you know the food is actually rather awesome and it’s not just for brunch. It’s a solid place for a meal before getting your dancing on.

The crab cakes were really good and not just filler. I’d order these again.

warm quinoa salad

I really enjoyed the quinoa salad as well. It’s perfect for a light lunch or a starter before a meal.

Mango Chili Martini

Georgia Peach Mint Lemonade

The table seemed to really go for the Georgia Peach Mint Lemonade which as mentioned before features fresh citrus versus the old days where you’d most likley get some canned stuff. The fresh zing really helps the drink stand out.

baby back ribs

The chef mentioned he originally had the ribs as a standalone entree but wanted to make it accessible. This would be the perfect snack for the happy hour crowd or an appetizer to share. The baby back ribs were falling off the bone and I loved the onion rings on the side.

Hot Mule

Hot Mule

The copper mugs have arrived at the Abbey! Get your spicy Hot Mule or just a regular Moscow Mule if you like. But to keep things spicy, be sure to get the Hot Mule with jalepeno. Ole!

Hot Mule – Stoli vodka, ginger, lime, jalepeno

LGBTA

LGBTA

I loved the cheeky LGBTA. The lettuce, gouda, bacon, turkey and avocado sandwich was great. And the fries were really good as well. It reminded me of my college days of eating avocado and turkey sandwiches like they were going out of style. I also loved BLTs so this is the best of both toothy sandwich worlds.

Effen Relaxed

Effen Relaxed

The Abbey’s massive patio means there’s a lot of cruising going on and what’s better than with a drink in hand? But you need one that’ll last more than a quick walk through. The Effen Relaxed is just that perfect summery drink featuring Effen vodka with basil, cucumber and lime. It’s like a spa drink, really.

Mango Chili Martini

Mango Chili Martini

I’ve noticed how spicy drinks tend to do well in LA and a sexy sipper would be the Mango Chili Martini (yes, I know it’s not an actual martini) but it’s a fun drink with Absolut mango vodka. And the mango slice with chili salt reminds me of tanjin.

turkey meatloaf

If you find yourself at the Abbey for dinner and in need of comfort food, the turkey meatloaf or the spaghetti and meatballs should do the trick. The meatloaf is slightly more sophisticated than mom’s but it nonetheless evokes feeling of contentment.

Sicilian meatball pasta

It’s either go big or go home. The Sicilian meatballs are massive and just how it should be for a filling plate of spaghetti and meatballs.

Jalepeno Lime Margarita

Remember what I said about spicy drinks? It also gets the blood pumping. Try the Jalepeno Lime Margarita for liquid courage before you talk to that cute guy.

Jalepeno Lime Margarita – Patron reposado tequila, house sour, Citronage, jalepeno, spices

Modern Gin and Tonic

Modern Gin and Tonic

The Abbey is now serving Madrid-style gin and tonics. Under the Modern G&Ts, you can get either Lemon Strawberry Basil, Orange Rosemary, Orange Mint or Jalepeno Cucumber Mint. We tried the Lemon Strawberry Basil which was a very pleasing combination. This would be another gorgeous drink for the patio.

Mango Mojito

Mango Mojito

Sure, there are a lot of fruity drinks at the Abbey but I really enjoyed the Mango Mojito. They use a light hand with the syrup so it’s not too sweet. Do I even need to say it’s another fetching patio drink?

The Abbey has always been known for its beefcakes but what about its pastries? The delectable sweets were very much appreciated by the group. The cupcake is a nod to the Hostess cupcake. Check out that squiggle! I also liked the light tiramisu.

Santa Monica Boulevardier

Santa Monica Boulevardier

The last drink I tried was the Santa Monica Boulevardier. Taking its name from the nearby boulevard, it’s based on the classic whiskey cocktail featuring whiskey, Campari and sweet vermouth. This is a well done version though I’ll probably just have it served up next time.
