DTLA: Brunch at Poppy + Rose

chicken and waffles
Downtown Los Angeles is full of specialized districts and in the flower district, there’s an interesting restaurant called Poppy + Rose. Opened just about two years ago, I’ve been meaning to check out Poppy + Rose for brunch. On an otherwise quiet stretch, the long line outside of Poppy + Rose moved fairly quickly to accommodate all the hungry brunchers on a Sunday a few weeks back. It’s fast casual so you place your order and find an empty table then await plates piled high with delicious-smelling and delicious-looking food. Pretty soon, you’ll just declare everything delicious-tasting.
The three of us shared the chicken and waffles, breakfast burrito with tri-tip and the pulled pork hash. The fried chicken was perfectly fried, juicy and went well with the waffles. I tend to eat savory first and treat my waffle as a mini dessert but others may want to drizzle the maple syrup all over both.

tri-tip breakfast burrito
I’ve never been much of a breakfast burrito fan and even then I tend to eat burritos very rarely since I’m a tacos fiend. But with my first bite, I remember why I used to love burritos… they’re just so much more satisfying than a trio of tacos. I wonder if you could order one to-go and stash it for a late-night binge. Oh wait, I like my food hot so nix that idea. Good thing you can pop by Poppy + Rose for a breakfast burrito fix. The steak was tender and I enjoyed the potatoes as well.

pulled pork hash
I asked for the pulled pork hash with soft-scrambled eggs. I tend to prefer soft-scrambled eggs over the very foodie fried eggs trend. It turned out the scrambled eggs were the perfect foil for the hash. Still, I can imagine a good runny egg combining with the sauce for the ultimate hash. I loved the hash browns underneath as well.
Poppy + Rose is the sort of place you wish was in every neighborhood but I’m glad this gem is in DTLA.
