Philly: Late Night Dinner at Morimoto

table side cocktail service
On our last night in Philly, we decided to hit up Morimoto for dinner. We wanted to hit up a Stephen Starr restaurant and we decided on the trendy Morimoto after my friend announced she wanted Asian food.
We headed over to Morimoto after drinks at Hop Sing Laundromat. We kept up the drinks by getting the drink on the menu that’s made table side.
A bartender comes over with all the ingredients and carefully puts together your whiskey cocktail (as you film it for instagram, naturally).

Kusuri
After the showy presentation, you get your very simply presented old fashioned variation. This went well with our appetizers.
Kusuri – Hibiki Harmony Japanese whisky, ginjo sake, ginger, lemon, cardamon, rhubarb bitters

Kinkaku-Ji
My friend had the other whiskey drink, the Kinkaku-Ji. With our drinks in hand, we were ready to tackle the menu.
Kinkaku-Ji – Bulleit bourbon, togarashi seven spice, honey, lemon

diver scallop ceviche
We started out with a couple of cold appetizers. We really liked the diver scallop ceviche. I thought serving it in a shell was also a cute idea.

hamachi
Across America you’ll see a yellowtail with jalepeno and ponzu dish. But rarely do you get a really good execution of it.

yosedofu
Then we got more table side service with the yosedofu, a tofu made table side. Fresh tofu is a thing of beauty. I loved the puffed rice served with it and it barely needed any sauce to perk up the mild flavor.

dobin mushi
Next we had the dobin mushi which was a (tea)pot of soup with shrimp, chicken and mushrooms. I loved that the soup was served in tea cups as well.

seafood toban yaki
The seafood toban yaki has shrimp, king crab, clams, scallops and bok choy in a citrus butter broth. After having our soup, I felt this cooled down too quickly and I rather have had more raw fish.
I love seafood though so we of course we ate it all.

ishi yaki bop
We also got the ishi yaki bop with yellow tail. The rice is served in a hot stone bowl and mixed table side (we apparently love table side preps). The yellowtail was great.

dessert
After our meal, I didn’t really need dessert but I gave in since it was our last night in town. Morimoto had this cool ice cream treat. My (barely) sweet tooth was satisfied after a few bites. Our server had recommended trying to get a little bit of everything at once which is a bit difficult but it was fun(ny) trying.
