Bar Minty: The Mezcal Martini with Vamonos Riendo

Mezcal Martini

One of my favorite things to do is the challenge of making a drink at friends’ home bars. Sure, I know I can make good drinks at home where I have plenty of time to mix something up. But when I’m away, I love discovering new products. I found this mezcal Vamonos Riendo and decided to make a type of martini.

Mezcal Martini

  • 2 oz mezcal
  • 1 oz dry vermouth
  • .50 oz yuzu liqueur (I used Yuzuri)
  • 2-3 dashes orange bitters
  • lemon twist

Add all ingredients except lemon twist to mixing glass with ice. Stir until chilled, about 30-40 seconds. Strain into cocktail coupe, express oils from the citrus twist over the drink and garnish with the twist.

While I like a traditional martini with London dry gin and dry vermouth, I recently read some bartenders are using blanc or bianco vermouths. Or adding a tiny bit of simple syrup. I’m in the “not too sweet” fan club but I know fat carries flavor. And by adding either a richer vermouth or simple can turn an ordinary drink to something quite memorable. So that is the idea behind adding a bit of yuzu liqueur and it works!
