Happy Hour at Essex Public House

The gay boyfriend and I wandered around Hollywood discussing the merits of the surrounding restaurants Sunday night. I joked we’re going to Hooters. We were fairly close to going to Miceli’s or Pig & Whistle. Should we try walking further to Loteria? 25 Degrees was our fall back if we didn’t find anything soon. But then I saw Essex.

The constant social media babble ingrained Essex into the grooves of my brain. I knew it was a new pub and they were constantly advertising happy hour specials. That worked for us since the gay boyfriend loves burgers and I don’t mind a cheap happy hour.

Our server mentioned $4 wells and before I could really study the Inspired Intoxicants, the cocktail menu, I blurted out, “a vodka tonic, please.”  I sucked that down fairly quickly and signaled another. Next time I’ll try the signature cocktails discounted to $7. The Fallon, Five Points and Rounder were my picks based on their whiskey nature.

Knowing I was going to probably order a burger, I opted for the chop salad. The seemingly Greek salad had this odd honey-mustard-ish dressing. They said it was a red wine vinaigrette but I didn’t detect red wine.

The gay boyfriend had the BBQ burger without the bacon and I got the sirloin burger. I also asked for a side of garlic fries. If this was a true happy hour, we probably would have gotten more apps to share but we were only interested in sharing the salad and fries. I’d like to try the grilled cheese next time. Or the regular menu looks pretty good.

Happy Hour is every day at Essex (4-7P) with late night happy hour Sunday through Wednesday (10P-2A, cocktails only). It’s available the entire restaurant so we opted to sit in the main dining room. There were still some big screens around but it was more quiet.
