Monday Supper at Lou

I have wanted to go to Lou, a wine bar in Hollywood, for years. When the opportunity arose last week, I jumped on it. And even better, it was Monday night and Lou serves a 3-course meal for $55 on Mondays. This supper includes a wine pairing.

Others had arrived earlier than I and started on a charcuterie plate. I had a little bite and it was quite tasty. I debated a glass before dinner but pretty soon I was glad I didn’t try to find myself a glass from the menu. The sparkling that came with the first course was fantastic. The fried squash blossom with pickled vegetables were so lovely, I wanted more.

I really liked how sturdy the fried squash blossom was. The flat package delivered the perfect amount of ricotta.

Lou, I should mention is situated in a strip mall and like many wonderful LA restaurants, it’s damn good. One you step inside, you forget about the hectic parking lot and spend every few minutes marveling over another owl knick knack or looking at the map in the corner to see where your food comes from.

Recently, Nick of TreasureLA asked me what was my happiest moment in the last couple of weeks. Flashbacks to many moments with friends occurred to me but easily my favorite bite of food was the fried heirloom tomato (baked?) that came with the hanger steak.

Tomatoes are absolutely some of my favorite foods and heirloom tomatoes? Forget about it. I was savoring every little bite and wondered if I could get a side order. The steak was absolutely cooked to perfection as well with juices that I sopped up with great crusty bread. I enjoyed this dish with the paired Clos Roche Blanche Touraine 2010 (Pineau d’Aunis). I love that Lou came to talk with us and we talked about his “eclectic” wines- they’re really not.

Rhubarb pie, ice cream

Was this the night I had a bite or two of dessert? It was not. The rhubarb pie was perfectly sweet-tart and sometimes, you just need a big ol’ scoop of great vanilla ice cream.
