Starry Kitchen Now at Tiara Cafe
Wha? What happened to one of my DTLA lunch staples, Starry Kitchen? Well, they’re heading into a new adventure. Recently they closed their location at California Plaza and are planning to move to a larger space. In the meantime, they’re at Tiara Cafe Tuesday-Saturday nights. But don’t call it a pop-up.
There are many SK favorites on the menu including the citrus sesame creamy tofu and the double-fried chicken wings but also new larger plates like the Singaporean Chili Crab that comes with bread for dipping. But I liked to drizzle the sauce on plain white rice. Heck, add a little of the sauce to the garlic noodles! You have to cover all your starches!
I really liked the new sesame leaf wrapped beef. Really great flavor and something I had never had before.
Also new was the whole eggplant with ginger sauce. I talked to a SK employee who didn’t like eggplant but was quickly converted to this wholesome eggplant. Some also liked adding the ginger sauce to rice for a kick.
The chicken fell off the bone from the Malaysian chicken curry. It was so tender, so luscious.
If you like the funky stuff, get the dried shrimp satay noodles topped with Niman Ranch ribeye. I loved how they also put lettuce on this dish. It gave it a nice crunch and lightened the sauce a bit.
This little corner of DTLA just got a dose of PERSONALITY! I can’t wait to see what the other larger plates are about. The striped bass sounds great and of course, going to Starry Kitchen isn’t just about the food. It’s about being entertained and supporting local food scene heroes.
But yes, you can still get the crispy tofu balls. BALLS.

That all looks great… what was the sesame wrapped beef like, and how was it seasoned?

it’s apparently a traditional Vietnamese dish. It tasted like perhaps the beef was dipped into fish sauce. I really liked it as did my friend. Basically we thought of it as a carb-free roll!
