DTLA: Lunch at Casa La Dona
Looking for an affordable lunch spot in Downtown Los Angeles can be an adventure at times. I followed my nose to a new Mexican restaurant I had seen during my DASH rides along Main Street. I made in for lunch a couple of weeks ago and was greeted by the very nice counter lady who wanted to do everything for us. She took our orders, brought the food including complimentary soups and even took our drinks and utensils over. For one of those “order at the counter and wait for your food” places, this surprised me how much service we got. The one thing she wanted us to do for ourselves was check out the salsa bar.
And what a bar it is. There were 18 fresh salsas out. When confronted with all those choices I went with…
… a simple salsa roja and salsa verde. Oh, I thought about going back for the onions and habanero or mango cilantro but thought I should check out how good basic salsas were. The red was very spicy. I am not sure I would have been able to handle the chipotle but I will try it next time.
The hot soup was very welcome on this breezy day. I love random soups and this one fit the bit tasting savory but not really like chicken. It was filled with delightful little pasta shells.
I wanted to get tacos but I eat tacos all the time. I tried something new to me and had the volcan al pastor. The shape reminded me of those bowls you’d present a taco salad in except smaller. Full of cheese and fatty pieces of al pastor, the volcan was topped with cilantro, tomatoes and pineapple. It was a bit too salty for me but I’m sensitive to salt.
I’m definitely trying the tacos next time.
