Getting a Salad at Built Custom Burgers
A few weeks ago, I went to Built Custom Burgers for lunch. The fast casual concept comes from The Counter Burgers who made customization incredibly easy years ago at their restaurants. It works similarly at Built but instead of checking off what you want off a paper list, you order at the counter and then customize as you go. It’s a bit like Chipotle in that regards. I opted for a “burger salad” instead of getting it in a bun- which you have multiple choices of types of buns.
First the patty- I got beef but they also offer turkey and veggie. Then you choose your cheese. As mentioned, I got it in a bowl so no bun for me. But then you have a choice of what kind of greens – lettuce or a mix of greens?
As I moved down the line, I automatically ordered “everything” which was kind of silly when you put more lettuce on top of lettuce. I had them take out the lettuce. The tomatoes are chopped for a burger as was most things. In went onions, cucumber, marinated red peppers, pepperoncini, artichoke hearts and then I added a premium option; avocado.
I had gotten regular fries but they also have sweet potato fries.
For my dressing, I got the sesame ginger. I probably could have used a little bit more ginger but it was fine since the marinated peppers and artichoke hearts were tangy enough on their own.
Built is across the street from the University of Southern California. Expect it to be crowded with students and faculty/staff alike.
