DTLA: First Look at Crane’s Downtown
Across the hallway from Peking Tavern is the newly opened Crane’s Downtown. They opened rather stealthily behind what I thought was a storage room. Sure, this “storage” room had a cool old bank vault door but apparently it’s the doorway to Crane’s. Once inside, it opens up to a very nice neighborhood bar.
Crane’s will be your go-to for whiskey on the rocks, tunes from their cool jukebox that looks like a giant iPod and there’s even a dance floor. Plus there’s a private room in the back where you can hang out and look at their booze storage.
Crane’s has something like 32 bottles of tequila, 16 bottles of Scotch, another 16 bottles of American whiskey (bourbon and rye) and you guessed it, 16 bottles of vodka. They do have a pitiful gin selection coming in at 3 bottles. They have assured me they’ll get at least one more gin. And whatever else people want. But for now, stick with the whisk(e)y and tequila.
We had a great time hanging out at Crane’s. I hope they keep the Christmas decor year round as it’s pretty festive but I understand it’s more a neighborhood bar and not a budding dive bar. I’m happy Crane’s and also Wendell opened in DTLA. Downtown needs more kinds of bars, not just craft cocktail bars. I love my carefully made drinks but sometimes a girl just wants her bourbon on the rocks.
