The Bun Shop in Koreatown opened last month. It is the first brick and mortar location of the The Bun Truck, a Los Angeles food truck that’s been around for a couple of years.

For lunch we got a couple of the combos. I opted for the spam buns with the regular shop fries.

We also got the spicy pig buns with sweet potato fries. The Bun Shop also offers Beefy; a Korean marinated beef with tempura fried onion and aioli, Pork BBQ; pork belly with cucumber, citrus slaw and spicy BBQ sauce, Katsu; crispy chicken with cucumber, citrus slaw and spicy BBQ sauce, Tempura Veg; fried avocado, cucumber, cilantro, onions and aioli as well as Tomanko; panko fried tomato, cucumber, citrus slaw and ranch dressing. As you can see, the combos are somewhat formulaic which is very food truck friendly. At the shop, it was a matter of picking your favorite protein or vegetarian offering.

The spam ones were my favorite with nice thick pieces with grilled onions, tomato and honey mustard sauce. The Spicy Pig featured a few squirts of sriracha though it looks like the pork may have the same spicy BBQ sauce featured in the beef and katsu buns. I did like the cucumber, scallions and tzatzki to help break up the thick sauce.

The combos come with salad. I would be interested in trying more sides and sharable items like the sticky wings and dosirak; Korean fried rice with kimchi, mushrooms and nori.

The Bun Shop sent out deep fried oreos and green tea ice cream for us to try. Now we’re talking! Deep fried oreos, for the win!
