SGV: Mexican American Breakfast at Flo’s Coffee Shop

Menudo Weekends

I must be on a breakfast kick lately with my recent meals at Jist and Kings Road Cafe. My fine dining partner and I hit up a hole-in-the-wall spot in El Monte in the San Gabriel Valley for American breakfast. They did have some Mexican dishes which became my focus for the day.

I asked my fine dining partner if she wanted to split a small menudo with me as I was going to get an entree but the waitress was kind enough to bring me just a small taste of the menudo. It was well made but it lacked some of the spices I was looking for plus I wanted some cilantro. I would probably order it again though if I went again for breakfast. There’s something magical about weekend menudo. Plus, I love tripe.

Usually I would be the one to get chicken fried steak but I was trying to decide between an omelette or what I did end up with, the chile verde. My friend chose her sides well- getting tater tots and biscuit and gravy. It was filling and exactly what she wanted.

Love that they have a biscuit and gravy as a bread option. I went with boring sourdough.

One of my favorite dishes is carne con chile verde. The pork seemed grilled rather than stewed in the chile verde (green salsa) sauce. It made it seem healthier and fresher somehow. I had the option of getting this with rice and beans but I can’t resist some good hash browns. I also got my eggs soft scrambled.

Flo’s does brisk business and there was a short wait for the small coffee shop. They close at 3 p.m. so get there early to enjoy breakfast.
