SGV: Sushi and More at Izakaya Akatora
I’ve been a long time fan of the restaurants from Michael Cardenas and when I found myself in downtown Alhambra, I decided to seek out Izakaya Akatora.
We went true izakaya style and ordered a little bit of everything. First we got a rainbow roll. Yes, yes, we could have gone with nigiri but thought this was the quickest way to decide which fish we might also want to order later.
We also got agadashi tofu which was covered with wonderful shaved bonito. This might have been our favorite dish of the night.
Our server recommended the beef tataki which I find similar to carpaccio (raw).
I was super into the idea of the uni mac and cheese. American favorite with the foie gras of the sea? Sure, bring it on! This dish was utterly rich as you can imagine. It was tough to get through more than a couple of bites without a swallow or two (of what? I recommend sake).
But wait, there was actual foie gras on the menu. Oh of course we ordered it. Actually at Akatora, there were a few different dishes with foie. I have a thing for sukiyaki though so that’s what we got. Sorry agadashi tofu, you were beat out by the sukiyaki as the favorite dish after all.
Just look at that lobe of love, erm, liver.
I’m heading back to Akatora to do an all-sushi meal soon.
