New Orleans: Beignets at Cafe du Monde
Oddly I never had beignets from Cafe du Monde the first time I went to New Orleans so I had to make up for it on this trip. After a late lunch at Gumbo Shop, we wandered over to find Cafe du Monde pretty empty. Perfect! I had heard about the horrific lines so I was grateful to get a seat right away. I suggested to my friend we split an order and she laughed at me. Oh no, we were to each order our own. Oh, I thought they looked a bit heavy with so much powdered sugar. She just shook her head at me. Pitying me for not knowing all the secrets.
I think they knew I never had beignets from them before because my order of beignets came with way more powdered sugar than my friend’s order. I may or may not have dumped just a bit off to reach that hot doughnut. The texture reminded me Chinese doughnuts (no, not the kind people eat with congee). Without even thinking about it, I did eat all three.
And it was totally worth it. And anyone who tells you there are better beignet shops should revisit Cafe du Monde. And of course get an iced cafe au lait! Such a good combo on that sweltering day.
I thought about when I could return again but sadly, I didn’t get any more. I’ll have to make it a stop the next time I’m in NOLA.
