Santa Monica: Sushi at Kaido Japanese
Recently we stopped at a random strip mall in Santa Monica on our way to a play. We had a choice of Japanese, Chinese, a deli or a seafood shack for dinner. My friend decided on Japanese. It was a Russian Roulette style of picking a place out for dinner and we landed on Kaido.
It was quite busy when we walked in and that’s always a good sign.
When faced with a new Japanese place, I tend to go with the sushi combo and add to it if any particular fish stands out.
Oddly my favorite of the combo was the spicy tuna roll!
There was soup and salad with the combo as well.
My friend opted to have sashimi which looked pretty good. I always worry though I wouldn’t get full on fish alone.
Which is why I suppose my friend got the plain soba. The server seemed surprised she didn’t want tempura with it. It turned out the soba was really good and had a good broth.
I normally love miso eggplant but this version was super sweet. My friend called it dessert eggplant.
This was a fair dinner but I wouldn’t go out of my way again. The service was pretty slow. Next time, let’s hope the roulette wheel lands on the seafood shack.
