The Southern California locations of Gyu-Kaku are celebrating Sakura Festival (cherry blossom festival) in a special way. For $55, you get a crazy dinner for two that includes 10 courses from now until April 21! If you’ve missed Valentine’s this year, what’s a better way to celebrate Spring, pink flowers and lots and lots of meat than taking your lovely out to dinner?

First you start with a salad which preps your stomach for the onslaught of meat and more meat.

Angus burger bites

We had a couple of appetizers including the slow-cooked Angus burger bites. If you have swung by for lunch before, this is similar to the Hamburg steak meal.

We also had fried calamari while waiting for our grill to heat up.

This location of Gyu-Kaku served drinks made with sake like the Lychee saketini or Sex on the Beach. I just went for pure sake. Kanpai!

As mentioned, you get MEAT! Why choose when you can get it all? There’s hanger steak, rib eye, shabu beef, pork belly and shrimp. We really enjoyed the bistro hanger steak with miso. You didn’t need the sauces on the table as this was well marinated.

Next we threw shrimp on the barbie.. er, well, we started grilling the pork belly and the shrimp together. I liked how the pork belly was pre-cut, creating the perfect bites. The pork belly grilled up very quickly so watch your grill. I liked this with the spicy sauce.

I loved how fresh the shrimp was with a bouncy mouth feel.

The easiest way to get your veggies in? Throw a foil packet on the grill. The foil steamed up the mushroom medley nicely.

I was starting to feel full but we powered through our last bites of rib eye (my favorite cut) and the yaki-shabu beef miso. My friend liked the simple seasoning on the beef while I liked the shabu beef.

When I was a kid, I was obsessed with chestnut cake. Then I grew up and realized it had a proper name, mont blanc. Now Gyu-Kaku combines that love with green tea. What a sweet ending!

PS- if you want an alcoholic treat, get the new peach jelly sake. It’s sake with bits of peach jelly. It feels so naughty.. keep it away from kids just to be safe.
