SGV: Vegetarian Chinese at Happy Family
After my recent vegetarian Chinese dim sum experience, I joined my friend on the hunt for the best veggie Chinese food in the SGV. We went to one of her favorite spots, Happy Family. I’ve seen this mini-chain for years and always wondered what it is like. I’m glad we swung by just in time for lunch specials.
We got a couple of lunch specials and also the lettuce wraps to start. The lunch special comes with soup which was a delightful hot and sour soup. That’s one of my favorite soups and you didn’t miss the meat in this one.
I found it a bit odd the lettuce cups were already made up for you but then again, it made it easy to divide up. These were fine. I’d add hot sauce to make it shine.
My friend opted for veggie kung pao which had an assortment of peanuts, soy beans and what I assume to be faux chicken. Eaten with plain white rice, this is very filling lunch. Be careful of the jalepeno slices if you don’t want that much spice.
I had read the thing to get was the basil eggplant. You don’t actually see much basil but the flavor was was infused into the tender eggplant. This is also another great dish with plain rice. After our meal, we jogged downstairs to the Ten Ren for milk tea and strolled through the food court in the plaza. They must sell stinky tofu because we ran out of there so quickly. Otherwise, I would have explored the duck specialist stall.
While I liked Happy Family well enough, the hunt for the best vegetarian Chinese food is still on. Next time, I’m jumping over a block to another veggie spot in Rowland Heights.(626) 965-9923 © The Minty 2016
