Hollywood: Tasting at Sushi of Gari
Sushi of Gari opened about three months ago in Hollywood. It’s the first Los Angeles location for the local chain based in New York. Unlike most “traditional” Japanese restaurants, Gari serves very inventive sushi. One of their signatures is a salmon and tomato nigiri. I was quite surprised how much I liked this sushi. Each piece of fish comes with carefully thought out sauces and accompaniments.
I had six pieces and I’m still thinking about a couple in particular. However, they were all so exciting and different. Take the Japanese red snapper with the crispy lotus root. It was dressed with a wasabi olive oil. Oil? And olive oil at that? But it added to the richness of the fish.
I know, I know.. we shouldn’t be eating blue fin but it’s kind of hard to pass up. This with the tofu puree was really cool. I wouldn’t have thought to make a sauce of tofu for the fish.
We also had the chu-toro blue fin which is not quite as rich but still very tasty. I liked the grated daikon with the ponzu on it.
One of my favorite fish is black cod which I usually have cooked in miso sauce so it was delightful to have it raw and in sushi form.
Finally, the glorious fluke with a pretty little quail egg. It was so decadent with the sweet onion and truffle sauce.
None of the sushi brings to mind fusion and over-sauced pieces from some places around town. Each piece had just the right amount of extra glitz which is perfect for a Hollywood sushi spot.(323) 400-6300 © The Minty 2016
