DTLA: Lunch at Spring Restaurant

Mussels
Over the holidays I went to Spring for lunch. It’s been open for almost a year now but it was the first time I had a chance to go.
The restaurant is huge! I love that you can see into the very open kitchen. And the bar looked like a fine place for a tipple.
We sat around the indoors fountain and perused the menu. I was surprised there wasn’t more “lunch” items. Sure, there was a salad but there weren’t any sandwiches. You can get a pretty good deal here but I wasn’t feeling everything in the prix fixe meal.
We got a couple of entrees to share. My friend had the Nicoise salad and I got the mussels.

bread
The mussels come with bread instead of fries. It didn’t quite sop up the juices very well but I liked the bun. There was quite the huge mound of mussels to work through but we did it. We ate every last mussel and even had to get a second bowl for the shell discards.

Nicoise salad
The Nicoise salad was a wild little thing. No fussy, perfectly cut pieces here. Instead, enjoy chunks of egg and halved cherry tomatoes, a handful of crisp green beans over a mound of lettuce. The tuna was well marinated and the egg yolks were a brilliant yellow. We had asked for the dressing to come on the side and two different dressings showed up. I used it sparingly since I thought the tuna had plenty of flavor.
I’d be interested in coming back for dinner to check out the refined French fare and of course, drinks.
