DTLA: Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken Now Open

the doughnuts!

Astro Doughnuts and Fried Chicken is now open in Downtown Los Angeles. This is the first LA outpost of the famed Washington, D.C. food truck and stores. I had a chance to check them out last week and tried all 7 available doughnuts and some fried chicken. They always have a few of their classic flavors available along with some special ones every month. I’m so sad I missed the special Sakura one they had in D.C. last month. Cherry blossoms!

Here’s a run down of the flavors I did try:

Creme Brulee – this is their most sold doughnut and it definitely was my favorite

PB&J- I loved this one!

Vanilla Glace (glazed) – If you must have a vanilla doughnut, this is a good one.

Chocolate Mudslide– My favorite kind of doughnut is a cake doughnut with nuts. This one is chocolate and fulfills all my secret doughnut longings.

Smoked Almond Brittle – a nice doughnut. I do love nuts on my doughnuts.

Strawberry Rhubarb Crisp – the strawberry and rhubarb was very subtle

Meyer Lemon Pie– this one was the crowd favorite among my coworkers when I brought back the doughnuts to the office

All the doughnuts were so light and fluffy. None were greasy and I would happily go out of my way to bring these to a meeting.

fried chicken feast!

I usually eat three pieces of fried chicken when I do eat fried chicken. Astro sells it either 2, 4 or 8 pieces. The two of us ended up ordering the 8 piece and taking back the breasts (I can tell you eaten cold the next day was fab!). I really enjoyed the chicken. Like the doughnuts, the pieces weren’t greasy. The batter was so light and crispy. And the chicken was moist and delicious. I also enjoyed the kimchi slaw, tater tots and cheddar biscuit.

I will definitely have to come back to try the fried chicken sandwiches. They offer breakfast ones as well. With those sandwiches, you get a choice of buns and the Old Bay doughnut sounded interesting.

more doughnuts!

Welcome to the neighborhood, Astro!
