Recap: Mind Fish Co x Otono LA Tuna Dinner

Basque tuna and avocado salad
Recently I attended a dinner thrown by Mind Fish Co, a new canned tuna you can buy from online retailers such as Amazon.com. The dinner was cooked by the brilliant chef Teresa Montano who is opening a restaurant called Otono in Highland Park sometime soon this month. Hopefully I’ll get to check it out then as I’m still thinking about this dinner!
Mind Fish is dedicated to sustainable, single line caught fish.

tuna and anchovy goat butter toast
Before we sat down to dinner, we enjoyed the tuna toast being passed around. The thickly buttered slices were buttered with anchovy goat butter. So savory and wonderful.
Then we were wowed by the beautiful tuna salad. It reminded me a bit of Japanese rolls but so much more avocado! This dish is so healthy yet you wouldn’t know it.

tuna cacio y pepe
I just couldn’t believe how this canned tuna was in so many tasty dishes. No way could this really be from a can? But in the hands of the masterful Chef Montano, everything was so good. I remember when she was at Border Grill and then later her first restaurant, Racion in Pasadena.

marmitako de atun
I go back and forth which was my favorite dish of the night. The marmitako de atun with lobster dashi was so good. I loved the big fat prawn and the mussel.

porchetta tonnato
But it was generally agreed around the table the best dish was the porchetta tonnato. Here the Mind Fish Co fish shows up in the sauce. The pork was so tender.

crema Catalana
We finished the dinner with a panna cotta or in Spanish, crema Catalana. I was so full, I could only eat a few bites.
Otono LA will have a Mind Fish Co tuna dish on their upcoming menu. I’m looking forward to it opening.
