DTLA: Pearl’s BBQ Arts District

Pearl’s BBQ

I recently checked out Pearl’s BBQ over in the Arts District in Downtown Los Angeles.

It’s named after owner Dana Blanchard’s grandmother Pearl who had Scottish and Texan roots. She arrived in the Los Angeles area in the early 1900s and raised chickens to sell eggs as well as pies during the Great Depression. Dana grew up eating his grandmother’s food  and now offers the Texas style BBQ via a smoker on the premise and served from the airstream on the large property in the Arts District. I noticed you can also do delivery (Postmates!) and pick up in addition to renting the space for private events.

You can miss the large Airstream!

stage

I love that there’s a stage for live music.

Snow White, the smoker

Dana told us the smoker is named after his daughter-in-law who was playing Snow White when his son met her.

brisket

I tried the brisket with four sides including potato salad, cole slaw, Texas caviar (bean salad) and yams. We also had pecan pie for dessert.

It’ll be interesting to see if Pearl’s can secure a liquor license seeing it’s an all outdoor space. The lot is so huge that I feel there should be a rodeo!
