Border Grill DTLA: Top Chef Masters Viewing Party
Chef Mary Sue of Border Grill made it through another round of Top Chef Masters! Border Grill will throw a viewing party for Top Chef Masters at all location this Wednesday, May 4 from 6 to 8 p.m. Join them in DTLA, Santa Monica or Las Vegas for a $25 prix fixe party that includes passed appetizers, a Border magarita and special surprise taste of Chef Mary Sue’s Top Chef Masters dishes. You can meet Chef Mary Sue at the Santa Monica location this Wednesday.
I dropped in a couple of weeks ago for another viewing party. The deal that night was an extended happy hour. I enjoyed sangria and caipirinhas as well as tacos, ceviche and my new favorite wild mushroom quesadilla.
I really loved the lamb tacos and the carnitas are a classic at Border Grill. I also really like the potato tacos but didn’t order them this evening.
My friend enjoyed her ceviches. We didn’t think they’d be so big at $3 a pop but they were more than filling.
The watercress salad was simple but with the addition of bleu cheese-filled bacon-wrapped dates, this became quite the salad.
Lately, I’ve been wondering if I can give up meat (just wondering- don’t get riled up pork lovers). Sometimes I think I can if I just substitute everything with mushrooms (I realize this is not a protein substitute). If it meant living on the wild mushroom quesadilla, I’d be pretty happy. The tortillas are handmade in house and the cheese was really wonderful.
One of the newer items at the DTLA location is the roasted potato rajas relleno. Remember what I said about loving their potato tacos? Well, imagine that stuffing in a huge relleno chile.
Can’t leave without the churro tots but the Mexican chocolate cream pie was amazing.

pssst…don’t forget 5/4 is the last day of Cinco de Drinko!
Mushrooms (along w/ black beans) are my goto meat-substitutes. It’s not too difficult to satisfy your umami craving w/ stuff like mushrooms. Those ceviche do look pretty good for $3.
