Northridge: Dumplings and Noodles at Mandarin Deli
Mandarin Deli is a local Southern California chain specializing in noodle soups and dumplings. A couple of years ago, I discovered they also did beef rolls very well. Growing up, my parents’ typical order would be beef noodle soups for everyone, an order of pan-fried dumplings, boiled dumplings, a mixed appetizer plates (which included my favorite pig’s ears) and seaweed salad for me. I was and still am a fiend for the vinegary seaweed salad.
When I visited my best friend a couple of weekends back, we had a short discussion on where to go to lunch. We tend to brave a Korean place or maybe a bowl of pho. I had seen there was a Mandarin Deli in Northridge and would my friend like to try it? She immediately said yes and she had been meaning to try it as well. Done and done.
Since it was just the two of us, I couldn’t put my family’s typical order in but I made sure we got the seaweed salad and an order of dumplings. We opted for the pan-fried dumplings which are made with beef. These were juicy, not oily and after a bit of chili paste, quite nice.
I wanted to get the preserved vegetable and shredded pork noodles though I really should have tried the handmade noodles with beef. My noodles were in a mild broth that I added copious amounts of chili oil to. Ah, I should have gotten the spicy beef noodles after all. Not that my bowl was bad but I began to be interested in what else I could order…next time. As it turned out, even after I had given a small bowl’s worth of noodles away to my friend, I still had a hell of a lot of noodles to contend with.
My friend really loved the silky smooth wonton wrappers but like me felt the broth was quite light. We viewed this as a good sign- no MSG.
Now I’m craving pig’s ears, spicy beef noodle soup and more dumplings.
