Chicago: Cocktails & Ramen at the Aviary
We were a bit apprehensive about getting into The Aviary without reservations. Turns out our fears were unjustified. We were seated in the lounge right away on a Friday night. We knew we didn’t want to do the tasting menu as we’d just had dinner but I decided I wanted to try the ramen despite being really full. Our server explained it wouldn’t be the giant bowls you’d find in Chinatown. Perfect! A snack!
After looking over the menu, I decided to go with the Spiritual Advisor which turned out to be two mini cocktails, a small glass of beer and a shot of Green Chartreuse. All four glasses were lined up and presented in an open Chartreuse box. I thought this was an amazing deal for $28, one of the pricier “cocktails” on the menu. I often wish I could taste more things and this was a great way to sample a bit.
I got the tonkotsu ramen which was indeed petite. However, there was actually more protein versus the ratio of noodles if you think about what’s served at at regular ramen joints.
Here’s a close up on the pork and quail egg. Admittedly I had expected the food to be a bit more modern (I dunno, vapor noodles with pork powder?) but I was glad in the end for “normal” noodles.
My friend got the Persimmon drink. I think we again thought she’d get something a bit more..showy. We kept seeing drinks enclosed in clear bags going by. I joked later it’d be funny if the wait staff wore space outfits but I suppose that’s just on TV.
