Little Tokyo: Lunch at Yakitori Koshiji
I was heading to Tangerine for Chinese food at Weller Court in Little Tokyo but found it was closed on a Monday. So I headed next door to Yakitori Koshiji. I hadn’t tried but always assumed it was closed for lunch like nearby Mako. It wasn’t and I happily ordered their yakitori set.
You get six skewers, soup, salad, pickles and for an extra charge, you can upgrade your plain white rice to soboro, a ground chicken rice.
After trying the yakitori, I would say get the plain rice next time as the chicken was a little distracting with the various grilled skewers. However the soboro itself is quite filling. It’s available as a dish on its own if you want to get just that for lunch.
I watched the yakitori guys very carefully chop meats and skewer them on before grilling. The set comes with six skewers and it’s chef’s choice. This day, I got bacon wrapped green beans, chicken, chicken meatballs, beef, squash and chicken wings. My favorites turned out to be all the chicken items. The Japanese definitely have a way with grilled chicken on sticks!
Koshiji has a large menu and I would love to explore more of it but I can see myself order this set over and over again.
