DTLA: Chego Now Open at Whole Foods
The new Whole Foods market opening was hotly anticipated in Downtown Los Angeles for months, if not more than a year. I went to a market research meeting with Whole Foods executives earlier this year where they asked the DTLA community what they were looking for the new store. There were many ideas but what I was most excited about having more casual lunch options. It was a huge surprise when Chego opened inside Whole Foods. I don’t know who came up with that idea but thank you!
I do go to the Chinatown location but having it at the Whole Foods is so much closer to me for lunch.
The menu is simplified with four bowls including my favorite, the Beefy T plus the Chubby Pork Belly, Sour Cream Hen House and the vegetarian option, Leafy T. You may also go with the sides; spinach salad, seasonal vegetables, pickles and the famous ooey gooey fries.
Since this Chego is at Whole Foods, some recipes were tweaked to accommodate Whole Foods organic policies.
I really liked this bowl. The beef was tender and had a nice mix of vegetables. Sometimes Chego bowls can be too saucy for me but this had the right amount. There was plenty of great rice as well. Initially I wondered if the fried egg was going to be good but it was just right and the yoke broke perfectly to mix in with the sauce, creating a velvety texture.
I’m going to enjoy coming here and exploring the rest of the store. For dessert, check out the cakes and pies at the next booth. The creme brulee looked really good.(213) 873-4745 © The Minty 2015
