Granada Hills: Bulgogi and Stew at O. Tofu House
When I found myself in the Valley recently, I had a craving for soon dobu, the Korean tofu soup. I checked out O. Tofu House which I found out later is related to Young Dong Tofu House in the San Gabriel Valley. At least I think it’s related, there are a few Young Dong tofu spots around town and they share the same website.
O. Tofu says they use organic tofu and claim to be healthier. In general, I find tofu soup to be fairly healthy so the real test was getting the bulgogi combo. The meat turned out great. It wasn’t too oily and just had the right amount of marinade.
I enjoyed all the banchan (side dishes) except the soup. My best friend said it’s normally better but it was the day after Christmas so maybe that’s why the corn soup was more on the corn-starchy side.
Otherwise, my faves were the bean sprouts, seaweed, fish cake and they don’t mess around with the kimchi. I almost asked for scissors to cut up the full sized leaves of cabbage.
I got the multi-grain rice with my soon dobu. I opted for medium spice level for the stew. It wasn’t actually that spicy so I could have tried it a little bit spicier. My friend says the kimchi beef is her favorite but I wanted to try the seafood one. It was good but I’d try the kimchi beef next time. I found the soup to be on the thinner side and I like thicker stews.
I’m really happy there are so many options for good Korean food in the Valley now. If you’re in the area, it beats driving down to Koreatown in LA.(818) 366-3313 © The Minty 2016
