Little Tokyo: Bacon Fried Rice at Far Bar

It’s been a while since I’ve been to Far Bar. I always meant to check out the food and finally did during a recent taps takeover night. The magic words this night were “bacon fried rice.”

We got a flight of Coedo Brewery beers which took over the taps at Far Bar that evening.

Ruri is the pilsner. It’s pleasant and easy drinking like a good pilsner should be. Shikkoku is a Schwarzbier. This was the darkest beer we tried but was still very light in mouth feel. Coedo-Stone-Garage Project is the Tsuyu Saison was  aged in white wine barrels. This was the one that split the camps. Some just didn’t care for it. While it grew on me. Beniaka, a Happoshu brewed with sweet potato. This was the table’s favorite of the night.

I should probably do something about my wings addiction but this wasn’t the night. The Ming wings at Far Bar are super crispy with a slight heat.

Although I normally don’t go for elaborate sushi rolls, the spicy tuna stack sounded interesting. The four of us quickly demolished this sucker and I wondered if we should get more but our mains hit the table including the duck udon and bacon fried rice.

The bacon fried rice not only had two healthy strips of bacon but big chunks of pork belly. I believe it may have also been cooked in butter since everything was rich. Or it could just be extra slick from pork fat.

On the lighter side, we had the duck udon. I enjoyed the crispy bits of duck skin, mushrooms and there was a good amount of meat as well. The hardboiled eggs were slightly over cooked but I forgave them. The yolks were huge! I appreciated the bits of kale in the soup giving it a very modern feel.

I was very happy with our late night meal and will now have to see how early they open because I may make this a a regular lunch spot.
