DTLA: Small Plates at Baldoria
Baldoria opened last year in the Little Tokyo neighborhood of Downtown Los Angeles. I would describe Baldoria as a neighborhood wine bar with a variety of small plates and pizza. There’s an extensive drinks list. In fact, only one page of the menu is dedicated to food versus the three pages for drinks.
Baldoria is known for their bottled cocktails. I had the Pear-fect One, a seasonal rum drink with distinct notes of spiced pear.
The Pear-fect One – Diplomatico 4-year anejo rum, spiced pear, ginger, lemon, Angostura bitters
Our table of four ordered a few noshes including the pistachio crusted grapes. These were very interesting. I love pistachios and I like grapes. I’m not entirely sure the combination was for me but our table really liked them.
I handled the ricotta toast better. Who doesn’t like lots of cheese on toast with candy striped fig compote?
I may or may not have saved a little bit of ricotta to slather on my braised bacon aracini. I felt the rice ball could do well with the classic meat and cheese pairing.
One of the popular items at Baldoria is the fried shortribs ravioli. Be sure to use the spicy arrabiatta sauce!
I like potatoes in all forms. The smashed fingerling potatoes are served with a nice creamy sauce but you almost didn’t need it.
One of the newer menu items is the fried chicken and Texas toast. The chicken is indeed very juicy.
With three kinds of mushrooms, the wild funghi pizza sounded great. It featured trumpet, shitake and crimini mushrooms. I liked the mild taleggio cheese as well. My favorite kinds of pizza tend to be the simple ones like sausage or mushroom. However, Baldoria’s most popular pizza is the Little Tokyo steak with miso marinated flat iron. Perhaps next time.
We had a very nice time at Baldoria and I can see why it’s a neighborhood favorite. There aren’t many casual wine bars in DTLA and it’s always nice to unwind with a glass of wine with a few plates to be shared with friends.(213) 947-3329 © The Minty 2017
