The Minty Mixes: Rainbow Sherbet Punch

rainbow sherbet punch

A couple of weeks ago, I made a punch for a kids’ party. I channeled my childhood and decided on rainbow sherbet punch. This was a fixture at every party and I remember my aunt making it with 7-Up and Hawaiian punch. I decided Hawaiian punch would be too sweet and opted for a couple of different juices including mango coconut and blood orange juices.

Then I put out bottles of booze to make it not so kid friendly. The crowd liked it best with the coconut rum since it enhanced all the tropical juices I used.

But what is sherbet punch? Well, think about ice cream floats and in particular vanilla ice cream and root beer. Now replicate it for a party. Some use just lime sherbet or raspberry sherbet. But I like how pretty the rainbow punch is so I planned my ingredients accordingly. If I made a lime one, maybe I’ll just stick with pineapple and another citrus juice. I’ve seen others make blue ones with tiny rubber duckies for showers. Basically if you can pour liquid into a bowl, you can make this.

Start out with a large punch bowl. The one I have can fit many liters of liquid. I popped in about a dozen scoops of rainbow sherbet (by the way, I do call it “sherbert”). Then I added in 2 liters of lemon lime soda, 1 liter of ginger ale, two quarts of mango coconut juice and and 375 mL of blood orange juice. I did float lemon and lime wheels on top but they were a bit lost in all the foam. I would suggest reserving them off to the side with maraschino cherries and picks for garnishing. If you want to go really fancy, make pineapple spears and use organic flowers for garnishes.

Oh, and I didn’t put ice in the punch bowl because I didn’t want it to be diluted too quickly. Put out a bowl or bucket of ice next to the punch bowl. With the liquor off to the side, the adults can also add as much (or as little) booze as they want. Put out a jigger if you don’t want people to free pour their way to instant silliness.
