Historic Filipinotown: New Drinks at Genever LA

63 Jeepney

After dinner at Porridge & Puffs, we went a couple blocks over to Genever for a nightcap. It’s the perfect one-two punch. It’s been a minute since I was at Genever and the menu has changed.

One of the most instagrammable drinks must be the striking 63 Jeepney which looks straight out of the jungle. It’s an intriguing mix of sloe gin and Bolivian brandy. I liked the fresh flavors of the pineapple and pink pepper corn combined with the tart citrus; calamansi.

63 Jeepney – Hayman’s sloe gin, Singani 63, calamansi, pineapple-pink peppercorn cordial, sparkling wine, pepper blossoms

Everything Buck the Girl

After a filling meal, a friend had the right idea by getting the Everything Buck the Girl. The refreshing buck which in this case was bourbon and ginger beer was great. It’s enhanced with a bit of spice from the chile verde liqueur as well as the grapefruit liqueur.

Everything Buck the Girl – Old Forester bourbon, Ancho Reyes verde liqueur, Giffard pamplemousse, ocean spray, ginger beer, lemon, Angostura bitters

Monsoon Wedding

One of my favorite gins is Perry’s Tot navy strength. It goes well with this almost neo-tiki drink with pistachio orgeat, Filipino rum and oleo saccharum made with lime.

Monsoon Wedding – Perry’s Tot navy strength gin, Tanduay rum, Velvet Falernum, pistachio orgeat, jasmine green tea, lime oleo saccharum, nutmeg

Phone Call from Istanbul

But truly, my heart lies with stirred drinks. Phone Call from Istabul is a winner that’s just lightened up a bit with orgeat and rose water. It’s a martini for Los Angeles!

Phone Call from Istanbul – Plymouth gin, Martini Rossi ambrato vermouth, pomegranate molasses, orgeat, rose water

Manila

As mentioned, I’m really a brown, bitter, stirred girl. So I immediately picked out Manila which uses the barrel aged Bols Genever. I like the additions of sherry and apple brandy which are also faves. The clove-studded orange twist puts me in mind of the recent holidays but really, it’s a genial drink for our now wet and rainy winter.

Manila – barrel aged Bols genever, Pedro Ximenez sherry, Clear Creek apple brandy, walnut bitters, Angostura bitters, clove-studded orange twist

I am enjoying the artsy neighborhood of Historic Filipinotown and I’m glad Genever is classy and comfortable bar to imbibe in.
