West LA: Xiao Long Bao at Tasty Noodle House
I love that good Chinese food is moving to further west than Chinatown. I recently checked out Tasty Noodle House on Sawtelle. The familiar San Gabriel Valley mini-chain has a few locations outside of the SGV including this one in West LA. This Tasty Noodle House is the only non-SGV restaurant for my Chinese food week this week.
We had to order the xiao long bao, the juicy soup dumplings. We got the pork ones as they had run out of the crab and pork dumplings.
I thought these were okay. I felt the mince on the ground pork wasn’t fine enough. If you like chunky dumplings, you might like these.
I loved that you got a huge portion of cucumber salad. Though perhaps they could be served in a larger dish because the suckers flew all over the place when you tried to scoop up a couple onto your plate.
I wanted a noodles dish and saw one with beef and tofu. I thought it was interesting it was more of an entree and the noodles were your carb. The beef was served on the side.
The beef noodles reminded me of the mabo tofu which we also ordered. I wished though they didn’t use frozen peas and carrots. These filler items are so not necessary. Plus there’s plenty of flavor from the spices!
We got eggplant as our veggie this night. These were nice and went well with the rice (that we ordered to go with the mabo tofu).
I’d return if I’m back on the Westside or maybe I’d just explore more of the new Chinese spots in West LA.
