Brunching in Silver Lake: Malo
Okay, picture this- brunch.
Now imagine, Mexican food.
Now think back to brunch.
Are you thinking heavy and greasy?
Well, then you’re not thinking of Malo. I was surprised how lovely and light my brunch at Malo was. I was invited to sample the brunch menu which is available both Saturdays and Sundays.
After having a Bloody Maria made with my fave Herradua, we sampled egg tostadas, chiliques, spinach enchiladas, and banana and mango French toast.
I am a self-admitted heavy meat eater. I’ve been trying to eat more beans and lentils though. I thought this eggs tostada was ideal. It had enough flavor and I didn’t miss the meat.
The vegan bean burrito or the spinach enchiladas would be great again for a vegetarian. And since I believe in eating my veggies, I would go for the spinach enchiladas.
I’m not generally a sweet breakfast person but I love French toast. Malo’s fresh take on French toast utilizes Mexican bolilos. This French toast wasn’t too sweet unless you added a ton of syrup which I didn’t want to do because I wanted to taste the fresh fruit in it.
But meat lovers, never fear, there’s a torta in it for you. A chicken torta to be exact. Sure, it’s healthy with sprouts (actually, most people I know love sprouts) but it’s tasty.
Breakfast + lunch = brunch. So that means we can dessert, right?
If the bread pudding, tres leches cake or flan doesn’t appeal then go back to liquid. Malo is introducing 2 new cocktails and I got to taste them. It was hard to pick a favorite but that’s why it’s fun to keep trying them to figure that out!
Martin’s Smashed was delicious! It features Martin Miller’s Westbourne Strength Gin, fresh fruit (I had it with fresh peaches that day), mint, lemon and simple syrup. A very tasty cocktail!
Boozers everywhere can rejoice with this adult horchata. It features Jimador Anejo Tequila, Kraken Black Spiced Rum, Cointreau, and House Made Horchata.
