Silver Lake Bar Adventures
Last Monday, I started my Silver Lake bar adventures at Barbrix. We came in for happy hour which is half off beer and wines by the glass with one specialty prosecco cocktail that changes weekly. While there is no discounted happy hour menu, the starters are relatively inexpensive.
Wow, this is the best arancini I’ve had in a while. Golden brown and a lovely pat of smoked mozarella in it.
I always have a hankering for seafood…and pork. These two were great and went great with the cocktail I was trying out. We also ordered lamb but my dining partner thought the meat was crumbly and it was so charred, there’s no way I could have gotten a pretty pic of it.

We then wandered over to brand spankin’ new Covell. Well, if you consider being open a couple of months brand new. I heard about this place about three or four months before it actually opened and then all of sudden, it was open. Bar Covell is a wine bar with the most interesting looking taps situated under a giant vaguely bowler hat shaped mirror. On the walls are vintage cameras. The place was packed. It was Monday night. Where did these people come from?
If I drink red, which I was most definitely drinking that night, I tend to gravitate towards syrahs and pinot noirs. My friend was sticking to whites due to the warm night. Dustin, one of the owners, picked out the most perfect pinot noir for me, the 2007 Anaba Pinot Noir from Sonoma Coast. I was actually somewhat surprised he didn’t find me something that wasn’t a pinot or syrah. Instead, he actually listened to me when I said that’s what I liked. Unlike most pinots though, this one had an impact. One of the descriptive adjectives was “leather.” Perhaps not a manly leather wearin’ cowboy on a chopper but definitely the sort of leather that might be secreted away in a drawer of a bedroom nightstand.

Sadly, we said goodbye and headed over to Thirsty Crow. While my initial impression of the place was positive, I’ve become more picky about cocktails (is that even possible?) so I eschewed them for whiskey on the rocks. My find this evening was Penderyn, a Welsh Whisky (please note the lack of an E).
My bar buddy wasn’t keen on TC so we made one last, unplanned stop that led us out of Silver Lake to Las Perlas and all the funny mustachioed men.

Hello, Shaker Face! This video is rated R for Run Away Cocktails.
Although I’ve been to Las Perlas plenty of times, I had forgotten they only have mezcal, tequila and beer. Oliver, the fantastic bartender we had, fashioned a tequila Manhattan for me.
