Hancock Park: Dinner at Vim Thai

I love when friends move so we get to try new neighborhood spots. I’ve eyed Vim Thai plenty of times while driving down Melrose to and from Pour Vous. We felt like Thai one evening and so we walked over to Vim since the parking lot can be less than ideal.

Once seated, eager staff want to take your order right away but we explained we never had been there so we got a walk through with the menu. We asked for seafood specialties and decided to get the spicy seafood. I always want green papaya salad and prefer pad thai over the next popular Thai noodles dish, pad see ew. I probably would have ordered another dish but three dishes turned out to be the right amount for three people. We didn’t even have leftovers!

We asked for the green papaya salad to be medium spicy and it did have a kick here and there. I ended up saving some of the peanuts to sprinkle on my rice to eat with the spicy seafood. We also asked for this to be medium spicy and whoo boy, it was way spicier than I thought it’d be. There was lots of fish, real crab, squid and mussels in this dish with a stray clam.

Next time we’ll try the pad see ew, the pad thai turned out a bit saucy for me. I thought it was edging towards the sweet side. Most people would add some sriracha but after enough spice from the seafood and papaya salad, I actually welcomed the slight sweetness. We got this with shrimp which turned out to be very plump.

Vim Thai is good for the neighborhood. My friends say they’ll probably order take-out from here if they don’t want to make the 5 minute walk over.
