Koreatown: KBBQ at Hae Jang Chong
With our vibrant Koreatown, it can be sometimes challenging to find a favorite Korean BBQ place. I tend to bounce around, always looking for something new. When friends suggested Hae Jang Chong, I realized I hadn’t been there in a few years but remembered it fondly.
HJC is an all-you-can-eat BBQ joint. They have an extensive menu but we concentrated on getting meat and more meat first. After your grill is dirty, HJC servers will dump chopped up radish on your grill to clean off the excess bits and grease. It’s really neat and probably saves you some time so you can grill some more. Other places tend to change their grills out and this can eat into your grilling time as the new grill heats up again.
The selection of banchan (appetizer dishes) is wonderful. I always refill kimchi and HJC’s steamed egg was a treat as well. We didn’t bother too much with the rice paper wraps though I do love them. They tend to fill you up though so I ate almost all my meaty bites with salad or banchan.
The marinated meats were the best and we got several orders of the beef.
My table mates were full but I wanted one more little treat. Shrimp! Perhaps it’s a bit of work to take off the shells but it’s a fun change after pork and beef.
And if you’re still not full, you can ask for kimchi fried rice made right on the grill.
I do recommend getting there early as HJC fills out. Look for the piggy sign in the middle of the strip mall.
