DTLA: Dinner at Ford’s Filling Station
Ford’s Filling Station moved from Culver City to Downtown Los Angeles about a year ago. It is now located inside the JW Marriott at LA Live. Although it’s in the middle of the hotel, it feels much like a free standing restaurant with the high sided booths surrounding the tables. There are also areas for the patio and bar that clearly feel like its own space and not part of the main dining area.
I dropped in for dinner with a friend. While she had a glass of wine, I went with a mixed drink. I chose the Lazy Lover, a cachaca that feels summery with the jalepeno infused Chartreuse. I also love Benedictine. These French liqueurs together with the cachaca was a new spin for me.

We started with the Hokkaido scallop and uni tostada. My friend and I are huge seafood fans. While the toppings were fine, I felt the tostada itself was slightly stale. We ended up eating the scallops and uni by itself.
We were very confused by the Serrano ham and artichoke. I know it was under salads but I suppose I still didn’t think it would be an actual salad. It was also missing Cara Cara oranges as listed on the menu– unless it was part of the dressing? The salad was also on top of a thick layer of mayo which I assume was meant for the artichokes. It was all too much for us. For $19, this was a disappointment.
I was very happy the server had split the charred skirt steak on two plates. We didn’t ask and it was very thoughtful. Served with wonderful roasted tomatoes, fingerling potatoes and onions, the steak was perfect. We asked for medium rare and it was exactly that.
The best thing we had was the whole roasted cauliflower. It seems like a pretty trendy thing but it totally works with capers and lemon. Simple and delicious.
I’ll swing by Ford’s Filling Station again for drinks and happy hour. I was also interested in the whole pig dinner. You would need to give them 8-10 days notice. That would be a fun group dinner.
