Studio City: BBQ Lunch at Barrel and Ashes

Frito pie

Frito pie

I recently checked out Barrel and Ashes for lunch. I rarely make it to the 818 so it was a nice treat to get away for barbeque. Led by French Laundry alums, the space is comfy and not stuffy. But I do recommend reservations even at lunch as they fill up quickly.

We started with the frito pie. While good, I miss the frito pie at Bar Ama. Now that’s a frito pie!

Instead, the better deal would be the pulled pork sandwich. You could eat half and be quite full.

hoe cake

Everyone raves about the hoe cake which admittedly is very decadent. It’s almost too much butter. It’s super moist and closer to a drenched rum cake in texture (except no rum) than a dry (drier) corn bread.

I got the BBQ combo for lunch. Everything was very good. My favorite was the chicken and the sausage. I loved the tangy greens as well. I’ll have to come back to try the ribs since ribs are my favorite of all BBQ items.

banana pudding

Barrel and Ashes sent out banana pudding for dessert. If you love creamy sweet banana puddings then this is the dessert for your Southern-loving heart.

I’ll have to come back for cocktails and brunch soon.
